Property compliance in Ontario

Ontario layers provincial codes over municipal by-laws more heavily than most provinces. The Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code set the baseline, the ESA regulates every electrical installation, the TSSA covers elevators, boilers and fuel systems, and the AODA adds accessibility deadlines that apply to most organizations. On top of that, cities like Toronto, Hamilton and Waterloo run their own rental licensing and apartment standards programs.

Worth knowing in Ontario

  • Toronto’s RentSafeTO program requires registration and audits for apartment buildings with 3+ storeys and 10+ units.
  • O. Reg. 413/12 mandates periodic structural evaluations of many commercial parking garages.
  • Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) regulation covers large commercial and multi-residential buildings.
